Cobia Boats is part of Maverick Boat Group, along with Maverick, Hewes and Pathfinder brands, comprising one of the most respected names in the marine industry.

When Maverick bought the hallowed Cobia brand in 2005, it immediately began refining the brand’s quality, design, and performance to match its three other nameplates, all known as easy-to-fish, uncluttered, and fishing-focused. Like them, Cobias balance freeboard for safety and fishability, boast handholds that are out of the way and yet handy, and offer intuitive helms and easy-to-operate convertible parts.

Cobia 280 CC

Cobia’s popular 277 CC has become the 280 CC. To the former’s proven running surface, smart layout, and abundant fishing features has been added a console design integrating a strong and stylish hardtop frame, a full three-sided windshield with electric wiper and vent, and an acrylic infinity dash ready for a full array of Garmin electronics.

Fishing features include two 47-gallon insulated fish boxes with macerated overboard drains; a 42-gallon livewell is optional. The helm seat features a tackle station and upgraded seating. Additional fishing options include kingfish and kite rod holders, and hardtop outriggers.

A 25-inch transom and optional cockpit toe rails provide a secure setting for battle with the roomy 94-square-foot cockpit.

The 280 CC boasts a full-feature head, and freshwater showers at transom and console sink.

For  sure-footed angling and boating ease, a boarding-ladder is hidden beneath a hatch, while the recessed bow rail and fold-down cleats and nav lights avoid tangles and snags. Even the anchor tucks into the bow; a windlass is optional.

The 280 CC is powered by twin Yamaha outboards, F200s or F300s with digital electronic steering.

Manufacturer’s Remark

At Cobia, our quality sets us apart. And the best just keeps getting better.

Center-console boats used to be bare-bones affairs, but Cobia’s 280 CC bucks the trend. The console hides a spacious head with a front entrance for easy access. Other comforts include an integrated under-seat cooler and hideaway bow table that make long days on the water more comfortable. -Joe Albanese, Executive Editor Salt Water Sportsman

Cobia 262 CC Overview

As the dimensions of many center-console boats grow to rival those of big-game battlewagons, it’s reassuring to know that top builders like Cobia haven’t forgotten about those for whom the ultimate choice is a family-friendly fishing boat, easy to trailer and store, and well-suited for a variety of situations.

Fishing on the Cobia 262 CC

Onboard rod stowage includes 12 holders flush-mounted on the covering boards and transom, horizontal racks for three rods on each gunwale, plus optional rocket launchers for five rods on the hardtop and four behind the helm seats. Angled kingfish-style holders on the hardtop frame are also an available option, as are additional flush-mounted holders on both covering boards.

A tackle center with aft-facing storage drawers and tackle trays, leaving 83 square feet of room for anglers in the cockpit, where an oval 29-gallon transom livewell with a clear lid and dual 45-gallon in-floor fish boxes (macerated as an option) fill all the prerequisites for a successful day of fishing.

Should you coax a trophy-size pelagic or bottomfish boatside this Cobia center console, the integrated swim platform and the transom door to port let you slide it easily into the cockpit. The freeboard gradually slopes aft, where 25-inch gunwales negate the need for a long gaff or landing net to reach the water.

Cobia 262 CC Boat Amenities

Wraparound bow seating includes foldaway backrests and dry storage. A locker at the bow stows the anchor and rode, and a large in-floor compartment accepts bucket, fenders, and wet gear.

The console boasts improved storage and walk-around space, as well as an integrated windshield frame and a step-in head compartment. A built-in console seat incorporates a 52-quart cooler.

The business side of the console offers cup holders, glove box, integrated footrest;, and mounting surface for two 9-inch MFDs, switches, VHF radio and engine monitoring display.

An optional full-height, three-sided windshield with a wiper and vent that, combined with the optional fiberglass hardtop, shelters the helm from the elements. A pair of captain’s chairs with contoured backrests, flip-up bolsters and pull-down armrests provide seating at the helm.

Handling and Running the Cobia 262

Potential owners who intend to cruise with family or friends, run-and-gun for dolphin and other pelagics, or do both will be glad to know that when turning 3,500 rpm, the boat cruises at 30.7 mph while sipping only 11.6 gph.

As for maneuverability, the 26-footer is a champ. It performs all turns smoothly, and with the desired aplomb and minimal effort from the skipper. Taking on large wakes at different angles and speeds always produced minimal impact, and neither the integrity of the vessel nor the comfort and safety of the crew were ever in question.

Cobia 262 CC Boat Performance

We took the 262 CC out for review near Fort Pierce Inlet in Florida, where it showed its agility and pep during the boat test. The twin Yamaha F200s evidently provided plenty of juice because this model from Cobia boats quickly jumped on plane, sprinted from zero to 30 mph in under 9 seconds, and repeatedly topped 53 mph at wide-open throttle. The high bow incorporates the necessary flare to knock down spray as the boat cuts through the waves.

Cobia boats feature smart deck layouts that place everything where it can be operated with minimal effort, allowing movement through the boat, free of awkward steps or hazards.

Freeboard hits the sweet spot—not too much or too little.

Wiring is easily accessed and labeled for maintenance.

Cobia hulls boast fine, sharp stems that use all of the boat’s length to slice through waves; large bow flares then push down spray for a ride that is soft, dry, relaxing and fuel efficient.

Cobia 320 CC

Cobia’s 320 CC is a big-water, hard-fishing boat ready for long-range adventures but still comfortably trailerable.

Serious fishing features include an unobstructed 82-square-foot cockpit, a tackle center with a sink and bait-prep area, undergunwale rod storage, two 55-gallon macerated in-deck fish boxes, and twin pressurized livewells with combined 70-gallon capacity.

An inward-opening side door can be a tuna door or, with a stowable ladder, provide cockpit entry from the dock or after a dive. Deluxe, independent helm seats face a panel with space for a pair of 16-inch displays and more.

Easy access to various systems is found throughout. Courtesy Cobia Boats

Typical of Cobias, the topside of the 320 is both elegant and comfortable. Split bow seats flank a retractable table that stores flush within the floor and raises electronically to become either a sun deck or bow table.

A walk-down, forward-entry head with 6-foot-2-inch ceiling houses an electric toilet, a sink with a shower faucet, a vanity, and storage cabinets.

To the optional fiberglass T-top, you might add kingfish rod holders or outriggers. Among other fishing options are four flush-mounted kite-fishing rod holders and upgraded electronics packages.

Power choices include twin Yamaha 300s or 425 XTOs—with digital electric steering—and, if optioned, the Helm Master Ex, an autopilot and joystick control.

Manufacturer’s Remark

Whether you’re fishing or cruising, Cobia’s thoughtfully designed decks make for a great day on the water.

Our tests confirm that the Cobia 320 CC is quick. Powered by a pair of Yamaha F300 V-6 outboards, it rockets from zero to 30 mph in 7.5 seconds and climbs to a top speed of 54.5 mph at 5,800 rpm. We also discovered superb maneuverability and a smooth, comfortable ride at any speed. – Jim Hendricks, Staff Editor, Fishing Group

Cobia Boats deck layouts position everything at hand when needed or wanted, and out of the way otherwise. No awkward steps or trip hazards. Enough freeboard to feel secure, not so much that fishing’s a pain. Handholds are unobtrusive, but handy when you need one.

It’s all done so you can focus on the fish and the fishing, not make adjustments to your boat.

There’s a lot to admire when you consider a Cobia: a fine, far-forward bow entry that extends running surfaces, slicing through waves before pushing them aside to create a soft ride. Further smoothing that ride is the variable-deadrise hull, which also aids fuel efficiency.

Cobias are built with backing plates and screw-retention materials at each fastening point, double-clamped hoses reinforced with sealant, and epoxy-coated and pressure-tested aluminum fuel tanks. Decks are stiffened with carbon-reinforced beams. Bilge interiors are finished. Electrical harnesses are created in-house with copper-tinned wiring that’s labeled.

Cobia is a Maverick Boat Group brand, along with Maverick, Hewes and Pathfinder boats.

Cobia 350 CC

The new Cobia 350 Center Console blends high style and hard-charging performance so you can fish hard and play easy.

A double-stepped, vacuum-infused hull makes getting to fishing grounds fast and fuel efficient, ahead of triple 300 hp or twin 425 hp Yamahas.

Fishing features include dual 42-gallon bait tanks (pleasing 96 percent of CC respondents), two large in-floor fish boxes, full tackle station, and bait prep area. Optional are deluxe top, kingfish rod holders, outriggers and kite-rod holders. Wide at 11 feet, 2 inches—as well as wide-open—the 350 CC has plenty of room for several anglers to fish.

The head is spacious, stand-up tall, and provides lockable storage for rods and gear. Courtesy Cobia Boats

Other options include joystick control, air conditioning and Garmin Master Suite electronics, including radar.

The 350 CC’s 11-person -seating includes triple helm seats, a two-person chaise longue and cushioned sun lounge; 40 percent of CC survey respondents want bow seating. A hideaway bow table electronically rises, for picnic or party or to complete a casting deck.

Within the walk-down console is a spacious berth with wooden cabinetry, an electric head, a combination sink/shower, and hidden, lockable rod storage. Easy access to the logical wiring and electrical system assures easy maintenance down the road.

Cobia prides itself on deck layouts with everything where it’s most likely used, and where that use is as easy as possible.

No awkward steps or trip hazards on deck. Handholds are handy when you need them, unobtrusive when you don’t. Displays within sight, controls within reach. You focus on the fish, not negotiating your boat.

Cobia hulls’ far-forward bow entries extend running surfaces to slice through waves before pushing them away for a dry ride. Variable deadrise hull gives soft, relaxing and fuel-efficient rides—what 80 percent of offshore center-console owners call their most valued characteristic.

Cobias are built with -backing plates and screw-retention materials at each fastening point, double-clamped hoses reinforced with sealant, epoxy-coated and pressure-tested aluminum fuel tanks, and labeled, copper-tinned wiring harnesses built in-house. Topside amenities include triple independent helm seats, a two-person chaise longue, and forward sun-lounge -seating.

Seven insulated boxes provide abundant cooler space and dry storage. The console’s interior houses an airy berth amid wooden cabinetry, plus an electric head and sink/shower.

Cobia didn’t forget that this is a fishing boat; its dual 42-gallon bait tanks, two huge in-floor macerated fish boxes, full tackle station/bait-prep area, and lockable below-deck rod locker exceed survey respondents’ expectations.

The 350’s open cockpit and 11-foot-2-inch beam create plenty of space for several anglers to fish at once—or to chase a hot fish around boatside. Battle over, an inward-opening side door -welcomes aboard even a big tuna.

Cobia has been part of the Maverick Boat Group family for fourteen years and along with siblings Hewes and Pathfinder prides itself on being a quality company with quality people building quality products.

That commitment is seen in such brand-wide attributes as 100 percent wood-free construction (avoiding a key buyer remorse woe revealed in our survey: wood rot); double-clamped and -sealed hoses and fittings; pressure-tested, epoxy-coated aluminum fuel tanks; and everything checked through a 300-point quality-assurance program.

Each boat’s design begins with a clear goal and set of criteria aimed at its intended use. The design process flows backward from that goal, with the assistance of serious anglers, committed boaters and skilled craftsmen. It’s not just a great boat; it’s a superb boat, is built to industry-leading American Boat and Yacht Council standards.

According to our survey, more than one-third of Cobia owners have owned their boats for seven years or more, higher than industry average.

Cobia 240 CC
Take the proven hull of the cherished Cobia 237 CC, create atop it a new deck even friendlier to both the tournament fisher and his or her family, and you’ve got Cobia’s new 240 Center Console.

The cockpit’s bow-to-stern level floor makes it the survey-desired 360-degree-access setting in which to wage a war with the biggest of fish (or frolic with the cruising family.) That carbon-fiber beam-reinforced deck houses a pair of 40-gallon insulated fish boxes ready for the catch of the day. Bait stays frisky in the 28-gallon livewell near the tackle station. Aft foldaway bench seating is standard.

Family time? A forward-entry walk-down head is a sure pleaser. Rain and spray are vanquished with an optional three-sided full windshield with wiper and vent, assisting in accomplishing the dry ride valued by survey respondents; add a hardtop (with additional rod holders) if you like. The whole gang will cheer for the cup holders and USB ports throughout the boat.

The hull? Fans of its parent, the 237 CC, know it for its comfortable open-water running — the most frequent demand of center-console boaters — and for fuel efficiency. Rated for up to 300 hp, the 240 CC scoots along at 44 mph ahead of a pair of Yamaha F115s, thrifty at 3 mpg at 27 mph. It’s range is 375 miles at that speed, thanks to a fuel capacity of 125 gallons.

Survey Says: On Target

  • Seaworthy, comfortable ride
  • Livewell for several dozen baits
  • Foldaway aft seating for comfortable cruising or passage to the fishing grounds
  • Meets owner desire for no-wood, rot-free construction
  • Forward coaming pads convert to lounge seatbacks, further expanding seating comfort
  • Generous standards

Owners Say

  • Love livewell and (optional) T-top

Cobia Says

  • Proven hull, contemporary deck layout with a no-step transition from aft deck to foredeck
  • Solid feel
  • Low maintenance, even years down the line
  • Safe, reliable

A real double-threat boat, this 24-footer boasts a 17-inch draft that enables anglers to venture into shallow bays, while the deep-V and 21.5-degree deadrise on the proven Cobia hull help it conquer a moderate chop and treat the skipper and crew to a comfortable run to and from their favorite offshore fishing grounds.

Construction is 100 percent composite for maximum rigidity and minimum weight. For durability and peak performance, the hardware is 316-grade stainless steel and wiring is copper-tinned. And for a more refined look and easier cleaning, all compartments and hatches are finished inside and out.

The deck layout blends form and purpose with a wide-open cockpit, level floor from bow to stern, generous storage and ample seating.

Cobia 240 CC Test
Optional backrests turn bow seats with insulated storage into lounges. Alex Suescun

At the bow, the dedicated anchor locker offers room for plenty of rode, and it can be rigged with an optional shoot-through and windlass to drop and retrieve the hook with the touch of a button and keep out debris. Symmetrical, elevated compartments, both insulated and with overboard drains and cushions, are bridged to create U-shaped seating up front, with recessed grab rails for safety and coaming pads for backrests. Optional foldaway backrests turn the bow seats into twin loungers.

A large in-floor compartment with the dimensions to stash boat fenders, anchor buoys, or other large, wet items sits between the bow seating and the forward console seat, with a cooler integrated into a door that swings open to port to enter the step-down head compartment inside the console. Along with a marine toilet, the head also includes a sink with freshwater faucet/pullout shower, a mirror, and storage for toiletries and such.

Our test boat came rigged with the optional hardtop — with a sturdy powder-coated aluminum frame, and fore and aft storage overhead for additional electronics or gear — designed as an extension of the console.

A three-sided windshield with wiper and electric vent shields the skipper from the elements at the helm, where the dash accommodates dual 12-inch displays, or a larger single unit, above the standard switch panel, leaving enough real estate for a multifunction gauge, plus flush-mounted VHF radio, twin cup holders, glove box, a nook to stow away mobile devices and other valuables, and a marine compass on top.

Cobia 240 CC Test
The console accommodates up to two 12-inch MFDs, a digital gauge, switches, stereo and more. Alex Suescun

A comfortable double-bolstered helm seat sports flip-down armrests and allows for driving while standing. It’s nestled into a fiberglass module with a foldaway footrest in the front and substantial tackle storage behind. Just aft, a pair of 33-gallon in-floor fish boxes (with optional macerator pump-out) parallel the gunwales, making it easy to put fish on ice without interrupting the cockpit action.

Aft seating — a foldaway bench on the transom that seats two comfortably — sits off-center to starboard to accommodate a 28-gallon livewell with clear lid to port, leaving space for a transom door in the corner to access the swim platform with telescoping boarding ladder. Folded up, the aft seat allows you to lift part of the transom bulkhead, which serves as an oversize hatch to the bilge.

Cobia 240 CC Test

Typical of Cobia boats, the 240 CC supplements the standard four rod holders on the covering boards with horizontal racks for two more outfits and a gaff or boat hook on each gunwale, as well as five upright and two slanted kingfish-style rod tubes welded on the hardtop frame, and additional flush-mounted holders to port and starboard. Coaming bolsters in the cockpit, USB ports and cup holders throughout, and recessed trim tabs round out this well-equipped center-console.

Powered by twin Yamaha F150s, the 24-footer jumped on plane without squatting and reached 30 mph in an average of 8.1 seconds. Top speed at wide-open throttle was 51 mph, and easing the controls back, the Cobia remained on plane at 2,900 rpm, doing 19 mph, an ideal pace for scouting bay grass flats or weed lines in blue water.

Both the turning radius and maneuverability were excellent, and the boat executed all turns at varying speeds and in different directions with ease and the desired predictability. Not satisfied to test the boat’s ride in the 2-foot chop outside Florida’s Lake Worth inlet, we sought passing boats and tackled their 3- and 4-foot wakes, a trial that earned the Cobia yet another thumbs up.

With all the accouterments of a top fishing boat and loaded with amenities usually reserved for larger models, the Cobia 240 CC is a top choice for anyone equally devoted to the pursuit of game fish as to making memories with the family on the water.

A seamless merger of convenience, style and serious angling features, the 320 CC is built and outfitted to take on big-water challenges — even fishing tournaments — and also meet the needs of crew members who prefer a more casual approach to boating and fishing. While its clean lines and classic styling contribute to the appeal, it’s the roomy, well-planned layout and the wealth of amenities, both fishing-related and otherwise, that are bound to raise eyebrows.

A hatch in the bow conceals a dedicated anchor locker complete with windlass and is part of an elevated platform (where the covering boards meet) large enough to serve as a perch from which to cast-net bait when conditions allow. Above-deck compartments to port and starboard provide bow seating for four to six people. A filler plank that butts against the forward bulkhead completes the U-shaped cushioned seating with ample storage underneath. A recessed grab rail traces the contour of the bow-seating backrests, which include two separate end sections that turn to face forward for lounging. And when it’s time for lunch or drinks, a table with fiberglass top that resides in the deck rises at the touch of a button.

The forward seat of the center console accommodates two, houses a 72-quart cooler beneath, and is integrated into the front fascia, which swings open to a spacious step-down head compartment with 6 feet 2 inches of height clearance, conveniently appointed with an electric marine toilet with macerator, vanity, Corian counter, sink, freshwater faucet/pull-out shower, closet with hangers, and storage cabinet. A large in-deck compartment in front of the console stows fenders, buoys, cast nets and other wet gear.

The helm side of the console incorporates a drop-in electronics pod with dimensions to hold dual 16-inch multifunction displays, plus digital gauges, a VHF radio, stereo, and full array of switches and control elements. A few inches below, the tilt steering wheel and throttle control are perfectly situated for easy reach and unobstructed view of the MFDs, while a storage cubby and a glove compartment keep cellphones and valuables safe and at arm’s length. An optional integrated windshield protects the skipper and a companion from rain and spray, while a pair of comfy helm chairs with flip-up bolsters and arm- and footrests enable driving while either sitting or standing. Said chairs and the rest of the upholstery are available in three optional color packages, including a custom tri-color package with elegant Bentley-style stitching.

Behind the helm seats, a tackle-storage center complete with a bait-prep area and sink faces the roomy cockpit.

A fiberglass hardtop with aluminum frame keeps the storage center, helm and forward console seat in the shade, and features an integrated electronics box, storage, and LED lighting fore and aft. A five-rod rocket launcher and additional rod holders on the frame, including a pair angled for trolling kingfish-style, are among the many available options. In addition, 11 flush-mounted rod holders sit properly spaced along the covering boards, and a horizontal rack under the portside gunwale tacks additional rod storage.

Storage capacity for live bait and the catch is also generous. Twin 55-gallon macerated fish boxes sit below deck in the cockpit, and a pair of 35-gallon livewells, insulated and pressurized, on the transom double the bait supply or enable you to carry two types of live bait. Clear lids make it easy to keep tabs on the bait throughout the day, and the sea chest supplying the intake ensures a constant flow of seawater.

A transom bench for two affords seating in the rear. It easily folds away when fishing, and the entire module that it folds into lifts electronically for instant, unhindered access to the bilge and the livewell hoses and wiring. Raw- and freshwater washdowns rest out of the way in opposite cockpit corners, below coaming bolsters; toe rails lend stability and leverage to anglers coaxing fish up from the depths; and an inward-opening side door to starboard simplifies boarding and loading at the dock, going for a swim, or boating a heavy catch.

Yamaha Outboard
At the time of this sea trial, Yamaha had not yet conducted performance testing on an optimized 320 CC, but Cobia provided basic data recorded during fine-tuning of the new model, which, according to the builder, cruises comfortably at 37 mph running at 4,000 rpm, yielding a range of 1.4 mpg. Yamaha

Calm seas with the occasional slow-rolling swell met us after clearing the jetties at Fort Pierce Inlet, Florida, and we soon confirmed that, when it comes to performance, the 320 CC doesn’t disappoint. Powered by a pair of Yamaha F300s, repeated takeoffs were quick, with no noticeable lag time, and the boat averaged 7.5 seconds to accelerate from zero to 30 mph. Top speed was more than adequate: 54.5 mph while turning 5,800 rpm, and maneuverability at different speeds was off the chart. I also slammed the outboards in reverse for good measure, and the Cobia promptly turned to both port and starboard without pronounced prop torque or taking on water.

Any serious offshore angler would be thrilled to own the Cobia 320 CC, and the ample seating, storage and comforts are sure to get a thumbs up from the entire family.

There are fishing boats whose high price is a source of owner pride. Fans of Cobia boats, in contrast, are proudest of the value and fish-worthy performance they get for their hard-earned boating dollar.

Cobia, a center console specialist (one bay boat and a pair of dual consoles in the line), is a sibling of Maverick Boat Co.’s Maverick skiffs, Hewes backcountry boats and Pathfinder bay boats. It became part of the four-decade-established Maverick family a dozen years ago, its 50-plus years of building family-friendly boats now enriched by Maverick’s state-of-the-art production ideas and techniques.

Those who know Cobia boats praise their attributes quite evenly: less than one point on a 50-point scale spanned our categories of Fishability, Performance, Design/Construction and Value. The most appreciated individual traits came from each of those categories too. Those responses paint a picture of a cherished line of boats offering safe, efficient fishing with strong manufacturer backing.

Cobia makes its own wiring harnesses, specific to each boat (and labeled at each end to short-circuit mysteries!). Hoses are double-clamped, and through-hulls are stainless steel. All fasteners are through-bolted, seated in screw-retention materials or both.

All features to appreciate in a rugged, comfortable fishing boat, Cobia fans agree.

COBIA 301 CC

Cobia’s 296 CC was the country’s top-selling 30-footer, the company says; its new 301 CC is stepping into those big shoes with added features.

The cockpit’s bigger, at 82 square feet, and a new console design places controls and screens in optimal settings. An inward-opening side door makes it easy to boat big fish, enter and exit the boat for diving or snorkeling, and disembark dockside.

Anglers will find the tackle station upgraded with a freshwater sink and rigging station. A pair of 80-gallon insulated fish boxes feature macerated overboard drain pumps. Two independently watered 28-gallon livewells keep bait lively.

The family’s sure to like the electric head with sink/shower, towel bar, toilet-paper holder and mirror, and the electronically adjusted forward table/sun lounge stored in-floor. There’s seating ahead of the console, and at the bow you can add bow backrests and cushions too.

Power up with your choice of twin Yamahas, 250 or 300 hp. Other options include T-top or hardtop; flush-mount kite-rod holders; upgraded electronics, including autopilot and radar; and outriggers and a hardened acrylic windshield with integrated frame. Pick your hull color, and color-match the dash to it, if you like.

It’s a bold move, replacing a proven boat like the Cobia 296, but then, the new Cobia 301 CC is a bold fishing boat.
