How To Revive and Release Inshore

Essential skills for every angler

Revive and Release Inshore Fish
Release inshore species safely Steve Sanford

Inshore species don’t require copious amounts of water running over their gills to recover from a fight. Hold the fish by the tail, rocking it gently from side to side to mimic its natural swimming action. Ideally, face the fish into the current or pull the fish forward gently. Never pull the fish backward, or even forward and backward — fish don’t swim that way. When the fish starts moving and struggles against your grip, let go. Choose a shallow, calm spot for the procedure so you’ll be able to retrieve the fish and extend CPR if the initial release attempt fails.
